Heightened geopolitical tensions have triggered volatility in crude oil prices, but one strategist is looking keenly for opportunities in the energy sector. Stephen Ellis, energy and utilities strategist at Morningstar, said oil market volatility does present challenges and urged investors to be patient, which "regularly pays off within energy." Brent crude oil prices were trading around $86.50 on Apr. 'Quality' names within energy Ellis said he searches for quality names when selecting stocks in the energy space. "All of these are 'moaty' firms that have some upside to our fair value estimates, even in a period of high oil prices," Ellis explained.

Eight economists, investment chiefs, and strategists that Business Insider recently spoke to credited healthier-than-anticipated consumer balance sheets and spending for the continued expansion. "Either that, or they're going to be maxed out — they can't get any more money. They're not going to have any liquidity to be able to continue to do the things they're going to do." He's also sticking with defensive stocks as consumer spending softens, including those in the consumer staples sector like Clorox (CLX) and Procter & Gamble (PG). Real estate is a "hated asset class" that's negatively correlated with interest rates, Sekera said.

"The Magnificent Seven stocks generally are starting to run out of steam at this point because their valuations are getting pretty full at this point of time," Morningstar's Chief Markets Strategist David Sekera told CNBC Pro on Feb. 2. However, Sekera thinks things are looking up for small-caps and value stocks — the latter of which he says are trading at an 11% discount relative to Morningstar's fair value and look like a "good area for investors to overweight in U.S. stocks right now." Tech stocks The chief strategist remains bullish on tech, albeit outside of the Magnificent Seven, and named Cognizant Technology Solutions and Snowflake as picks to play the theme. Value in energy The energy sector — one of the laggards of the stock market last year — is also on Sekera's radar. Morningstar gives stocks a rating of between one and five stars, with a top rating indicating that the shares are undervalued.

Investors should take a second look at the oil and gas exploration company Ovintiv , according to Citibank. Ovintiv's stock collapsed earlier this year and is down near 12%, underperforming the S & P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF which is up 2% for year. Citi believes Ovintiv's performance in early 2024 will improve with the investment bank putting oil and condensate production 2% above consensus estimates. Ovintiv's production plateau will rise after assessing performance on wells acquired in the Midland acreage earlier this year, according to Citi. Meanwhile, Citi downgraded APA Corp, an oil and gas company with a similar market cap to Ovintiv.

Here's a look at what Exxon is getting in Pioneer and how Wall Street is reacting to the deal. Piper Sandler analyst Ryan Todd also pointed to Chevron as a company that could feel added pressure from Exxon's acquisition of Pioneer. Exxon's Denbury deal, for example, seeks to capitalize on a carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) company on the Gulf Coast and Rocky Mountain regions. What it means for Exxon's stock Piper Sandler's Todd maintained his overweight rating on Exxon on Wednesday and praised the Pioneer deal. However, Exxon's stock was down 3% in early trading Wednesday, while Pioneer rose just 1%, suggesting others are less sure.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermidAug 2 (Reuters) - Occidental Petroleum (OXY.N) on Wednesday raised its full-year production forecast by 1%, but missed second-quarter profit expectations due to a slide in oil and gas prices and took a writedown to exit some operations. Weak oil and gas prices have hit earnings of U.S. oil producers after a bumper year in 2022 when Russia's invasion of Ukraine buoyed energy prices. The better-than-expected output in the quarter also helped the company raise its full-year production guidance by 1% to between 1.19 million boepd and 1.24 million boepd, from a midpoint of 1.195 million previously. Meanwhile, rival U.S. oil producers Marathon Oil (MRO.N) and APA Corp (APA.O) reported quarterly earnings that beat analysts' estimates on higher than projected output. Apache said output was tracking in line with its full-year production guidance of 404,000 to 408,000 boepd.

May 8 (Reuters) - Shale oil producer Devon Energy (DVN.N) on Monday topped Wall Street estimates for first-quarter profit on high demand for crude oil, and raised its share repurchase program by 50% to $3 billion. Energy companies have started boosting investor returns since last year with the excess cash they generated aided by higher crude prices. While crude price fell during the first quarter, nearly 20% lower compared to last year when prices soared to multi-year peaks following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, they were still high enough for producers to remain profitable. Shale producers Marathon Oil Corp (MRO.N), APA Corp (APA.O) and EOG Resources also posted profit above estimates last week, helped by strong crude prices and demand. May 3 (Reuters) - U.S. shale oil producers Marathon Oil Corp (MRO.N) and APA Corp (APA.O) on Wednesday topped Wall Street's first-quarter profit estimates on strong crude prices and demand. APA lowered its full-year capital spending estimate to about $1.9 billion from about $2 billion, citing a decrease in natural gas output. Total oil production rose 4% in the January-March quarter to 197,185 barrels per day (bpd). Rival Marathon said its quarterly oil production increased 10.7% to 186,000 bpd. It forecast second-quarter oil production of about 190,000 bpd, or around the mid-point of its full-year outlook.

April 3 (Reuters) - U.S. energy stocks hit an over one-month high on Monday, following a rally in European peers as crude prices rose more than 6% following a surprise announcement by Saudi Arabia and other OPEC+ oil producers to cut production. The S&P 500 energy index (.SPNY) added 4.2%, eying its best day in six months, while the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) traded flat. So any amount of oil price incrementally higher from here is very good for margins and it's very good for these stocks." Other oil producers Occidental Petroleum (OXY.N), ConocoPhillips (COP.N), Devon Energy (DVN.N), Marathon Oil (MRO.N) and APA Corp (APA.O) gained between 6.3% and 9.5%. Alastair Syme, head of energy research at Citi, said investors had recently been reducing the weight of energy stocks in their portfolios, and that any move to re-weight would likely benefit most of the largest cap stocks.

Feb 8 (Reuters) - U.S. oil producer APA Corp (APA.O) said on Wednesday that it had found oil after drilling Sapakara South-2 (SPS-2) appraisal well in Block 58, offshore Suriname. Exploration off the South American country's coast has been watched closely as it is just over the border from massive oil discoveries made by an Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N)-led consortium in Guyana that are estimated to hold nearly 11 billion barrels of oil equivalent. The well is located about 4.6 kms south of the Sapakara South-1 (SPS-1) appraisal well, where APA found oil in 2021. The company had in November wound up drilling operations at the Awari well in Block 58 as it was "deemed noncommercial." French energy major TotalEnergies SE (TTEF.PA) operates Block 58, with a 50% working interest, while APA holds the other half.
